The two volumes of short stories which established Katberine Mansfield s position as a writer of importance» appeared in close succession at the beginning of the 1920 s - "Bliss and Other Stories in December 1920, «The Garden Party and Other Stories" in March 1922. By that time Katherine Mansfield had already made a name for herself as writer and critic, contributing stories to various periodicals and regular book reviews to the "Athenaeum",
But the two collections of stories afforded a more comprehensive view of her performance as a writer and confirmed what discerning readers had felt before - that Katherine Mansfield s work represented a new departure in the field of the short story in English,
The unique quality of her stories was acknowledged unstint-ingly by prominent fellownfrlters like Thomas Hardy, H.G.Wells, John Galsworthy and Walter de la Mare, and came as a revelation to writers who had not yet made their mark like A.E,Copperd or Elizabeth Bowen.
